Reliance Jio announces Jio-Bharat Phone priced at Rs 999 with unlimited calls, 14GB data at Rs 123 per month

The Indian telecom provider Reliance Jio has announced the release of the Jio Bharat, a new smartphone with a starting price of Rs 999 (about $12.2 USD). The 250 million Indian consumers still using 2G networks due to the high cost of upgrading to 4G networks are the target market for the Jio Bharat phone, which aims to provide affordable access to 4G connection and contemporary features.

The Jio Bharat phone is a 4G equipped handset that offers a variety of contemporary features, including access to Jio’s on-demand film and music streaming services, JioCinema and JioSaavn, and mobile payment capabilities with UPI (Unified Payments Interface). The phone has a microSD card slot, a 2-inch display, 48 GB of memory, support for expandable storage, and a 0.3 VGA camera.

The Jio Bharat phone will be produced by Reliance Jio, and the company will also work with other phone manufacturers to embrace the Jio Bharat Platform for creating similar phones. Karbonn, a business with its headquarters in Delhi, has already committed to utilising the Jio Bharat Platform. With this reasonably priced 4G phone offering, Reliance hopes to upend the 2G market and gain a greater market share.

Along with the Jio Bharat phone, Reliance Jio unveiled a cost-effective tariff plan. The monthly package offers 14GB of internet use and unlimited phone calls for 123 Indian rupees ($1.5 USD), or about 123 Indian rupees. Customers who choose a yearly subscription can purchase the plan for 1,234 Indian rupees, or around $15 USD.

Beginning on July 7, 2023, people will be able to purchase the Jio Bharat phone as part of a “beta trial” to make sure the platform and procedures can handle millions of feature phone users being upgraded.

By bridging the digital gap and providing inexpensive access to 4G connection and contemporary services for a substantial portion of the Indian population still using 2G networks, Reliance Jio hopes to increase the size of its customer base.
